Most carved wood items are nowadays produced with the aid of machines (pantographs), which allow a consistent reduction of production time. The incidence of labour needed for a fully hand-carved wooden item on the production cost is relevant, thus making its sale price almost equal to the price of an antique. This is the reason why true masters of hand woodcarving have almost disappeared; as far as price is concerned, their creations, in fact, cannot compete with items made with the aid of pantographs (including machine-rough-hewed items which are only finished off by hand). However, there is an important factor which should be born in mind, namely that machine-carved items cannot equal the artistic beauty of fully hand-carved creations. In fact, from an artistic point of view items created by means of pantographs are often unrefined and rough, whereas hand-carved creations undoubtedly have a superior artistic quality. The works of the master woodcarver Mr Eugenio Chirico are fully hand-carved, without using pantographs. This can be noticed by simply observing carving details, all different from one another, or the surface of the wood, which bears the unmistakable marks of the gouge, or, most important of all, Mr Chirico’s typical scroll (a large curl), which cannot be reproduced by machine (click here to see some stages of hand-carving carried out by Mr Chirico). As a general rule, jelutong wood ( of Malaysian origin) is used for carving, because of its softness and absence of knags. However, the carver is able to work any kind of wood, so as to meet the customers’ particular requirement. The articles we present on this web page are part of the regular production, and, by request, can also be reproduced in different measures. All articles presented on this web site are in stock; custom-made articles will be commissioned to the woodcarver.
Upon customer’s request, and after a careful study, the woodcarver is able to create or reproduce any object. Most of the articles we present on this web site are unfinished, so that each customer has the possibility to choose the finish he prefers, according to his particular requirements. Gilding is carried out with gold foil (upon request, also pure gold) using exclusively the gouache technique, which requires a long time but produces the most precious gilding (click here to see some stages of “gouache” gilding).
